Admittedly, when receiving it, we thought the Thermacell looked like one of those gizmos that doesn’t really work in real-life. However, after three years of testing on the patio, the hunting blind and the beach, we wholeheartedly endorse the Thermacell.
Simply put, the device uses a small butane cylinder to cook an insecticide-laden pad, creating an invisible bubble of protection around the user. In still air, the protection zone is approximately 15’ in diameter. The repellent is a synthetic version of a popular insecticide made from chrysanthemum flowers and barely has an odor. However, bugs certainly don’t like it.
In limited testing, game animals don’t seem to detect or mind the odor as one of our blind-mates killed a huge wild boar only 20 feet away from us after the Thermacell had been in operation for several hours. There is also a holster for the device that many turkey hunters and fisherman swear by for keeping mosquitoes at bay.
The only downside we’ve found is that in windy locations, the bubble of protection is quickly swept away, but then again, most flying insects are likewise so it isn’t a major drawback. Cost per use is more than insect repellent but not unreasonable given the protection provided. Considering it gives all-around, 100% body protection while in operation, it is quite a bargain.
The Thermacell starter kit can be purchased for around $20 at most retailers that sell outdoor equipment and many ‘big-box’ stores. A refill kit that lasts 12 hours is approximately the same price. For more information, visit http://www.thermacell.com
