Wisconsin Smallmouth Bass Fest 2010: Day 2

Frank and his muskie

The story of day 2 is a big story: Muskie!!

We had just arrived on the river.   It was up approximately 2 feet above normal and the fishing promised to be tough.

Our first stop after running downriver was a broad, rapid flat.  Over the past two days we have found that the bass are feeding actively in the midst of the strongest current.   Many places we fish would be almost impossible to hold a boat in place without using the big motor.

During one of these floats, the boat with my buddies Bob and Frank had drifted to the middle of the river.  I saw that Frank appeared to be hung up on the bottom.  About 10 minutes later, we realized that the riverbottom was now swirling next to the boat.  A huge splash, a large tail fin and we realized that not only had Frank hooked one of the most prized of freshwater fish, he had hooked a big one.

It ended up taking nearly all of us to manuever boats, shout helpful suggestions and finally bring the fish into the boat.  It was a monster.

The final tale of the tape was a classic Wisconsin muskellunge that weighed 22 pounds, 2 ounces and 44” long.  Our host and overall guide John managed to revive the fish and it swam off with a mighty thrust of its tale.

The rest of the day was somewhat humdrum but with a start like that, we were still in high spirits when Frank bought us steak dinners and drinks at the nearby roadhouse.

Now, we’re off for Day 3 of the grand Northwoods Adventure.
