New record catfish

OK, this isn’t Indiana-related, or even within North America, but we thought we would show you the newest world-record catfish.

This fish would require approximately 600 pounds of hushpuppies.  Of course, we don’t believe the Italians eat hushpuppies.

According to Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper, angler Roberto Godi caught the 8.2′  Wels catfish in the River Po at Mantova, northern Italy.  The fish inhaled a live “bream” and required a 45-minute fight to land.  Note: we would assume what they are calling a “bream” is actually a bluegill, but since this is Spain, they could mean something like a perch or possibly a live marmoset.

The International Game Fish Association is still verifying the record but if it meets the IGFA standards, this would be the large freshwater fish ever caught in Europe.

Admirably, the fish was weighed and then returned live into the river.

We have just crossed the River Po off our list of possible European swimming holes.

One can only imagine if these creatures were stocked in Hardy Lake (click here for an explaination)
