DNR eagle dead
A 20 year veteran of the DNR has died.
Eagle c-52 has been a member of the DNR since 1988 and given literally thousands of people an up-close-and-personal interaction with America’s national bird.
The eagle was part of the original effort to re-introduce the birds into Indiana. It arrived from Alaska as a fledgling but biologists soon noted it had an injured wing. Later test proved that the defect was genetic and would prevent the bird from ever surviving in the wild. It was then raised and cared for by DNR staff members where it became a well-known ambassador for the department and non-game programs.
This writer first saw the bird about 15 years ago during a program when it became a tad unruly and we marveled at the size of it’s giant claws…at the time, we felt there was a pretty good chance that they would have soon been embedded in our scalp.
The eagle died during surgery this week; my scalp is still intact.
